Typically, I am not a shot girl.
& If you are anything like me – a caffeine ADDICT– then you understand one cup of coffee is usually not enough to get you through your day (this is EXCLUDING Mondays which has been re claimed as the only week day where you cant have enough coffee). .
SO, as I started growing older I started to see and feel the downside of drinking so much caffeine (apparently that mid afternoon caffeine crash IS a real thing) so I started asking Local Health Gurus –ahem: doctors– about the downsides of drinking to much coffee on a daily basis, this is what I was told;
- – your risk of early death (yes death, sorry i didn’t ease into that one) goes up if you regularly have four or more cups of coffee a day
- – caffeine is addictive, and lack of caffeine can result in headaches, lack of sleep, restlessness, anxiety just to name a few
- – high blood pressure and increased heart rate **JUST to list a few**Living in Miami aka latin america, the usual cure for the mid afternoon slump is -you guessed it- coffee! A little shot (literally they serve this coffee in a tiny cup with little shot glasses to share) of espresso with a lot (ALOT) of sugar. But this is exactly the thing that I was trying to get away from so, I began actively looking for a healthier alternative. This is where I found Ginger Shots. Yup I’m talking about just a little shot of ginger root that has been juiced. I am warning you now, you do not NOT take this shot for the taste (a common misconception due to the deliciousness of gingerale) but it is EXTREMELY harsh and it burns. But once I started to replace that second or third cup of coffee with a shot of ginger I began to notice a significant change in my day to day, and as I started doing more research I discovered that ginger has significant health benefits, both short and long term.
Short Term Benefits:
As SOON as you take your shot, you will feel your energy levels improve and your senses feel heightened (maybe thats its because I feel like a badass for getting the shot down, but either way it works for me) and its also a daily dose of intense nutrition. It improves digestion, circulation as well as raises your immunity and has been proved to improve your cognitive function (AKA reasoning, attention ,memory, language).
Relieves the Symptoms for a Cold or Flu
When I am sick or feeling myself getting sick.. I start doing shots of ginger. basically ASAP your sinus’ will clear up in addition to the ginger helping to relive the pain of sore throats, that groggy feeling, and even subdue your cough. Ginger naturally warms the body and will make you sweat (take a shot hungover and you will start SWEATIN..). This is especially helpful if you have a fever as the ginger works as a natural sanitizer for your body. VOILA..you are almost cured again..
Relieves the pain from your period
Ginger has been used as the GO TO pain reliever for over 5000 years in China and India, it has to be doing something right..
Helps relieve Nausea: Even morning sickness!
Got a case of the stomach flu or even worse, cant stop feeling the effects of morning sickness? Nothing a ginger shot cant help with. Ginger has been helping fisher men with sea sickness FOREVER and in some cases can be more effective then almost anything you can buy over the counter to relieve pregnant women of nausea (so they say, I’m not a pregnant woman nor a fisherman). Pregnant women have been chewing on ginger, or doing ginger shots to cure them from morning sickness because ginger is all natural and it helps to neutralize stomach acid so basically relief.
Long Term Effects;
Well the most important long terms effects (in my opinion anyways) are that the ginger root is literally anti everthinggggg….
ANTI INFLAMMATORY ANTI CANCER
ANTI VIRAL ANTISEPTIC ANTIHISTAMIN
..do you really need more convincing of the long term benefits? okay…read on..
Soothes Muscle Soreness
Did you know if you take a shot of ginger everyday, it will help make your muscles feel better after that long workout? If working out is part of your weekly routine then you should TRY to include a ginger shot in your pre-workout (or morning) routine, unless you prefer to feel the burn (literally).
Boosts Metabolism aka helps you burn that stubborn fat
No, this isn’t another Detox Tea type of deal. You will still need to exercise and eat healthy (sorry!) but if you do both of those things AND add ginger into the mix you will see your body hard at work to enhance fat digestion and decrease appetite. Ginger raises the temperature of your body, which puts that boost in your metabolism and then helps you burn more fat. Also it
can act as a natural appetite suppressant -also ginger has ZERO calories- so it helps you eat when your hungry and not when your bored.
Will make your dentist smile
So we have learned how our good friend ginger is so good at fighting infections, this is no exception for our oral health. Ginger can help fight gingivitis as well as many other gum diseases ( as well as many other baterical infections).
Personally using ginger everyday has been extremely beneficially for me. First off, as a already high energy person I don’t need to add more caffeine into that equation ( it makes me look and feel like a crazy lady).Ginger helps me to feel energized and ready for the day without the over the top caffeine jitters that two+ cups of coffee will do to you.
Not only do I feel the benefits on the day to day, but If I am sick or hungover or stressed..ginger is the first choice for a cure, and usually helps the most.
I am not one to get lost in the vices of the world today, so when I am feeling bad in ANY WAY, ginger is my GO TO.
HOW TO GINGER:
There are so many ways to get your ginger fix in a way that you can enjoy it.
Typically the ginger shot will come with lemon and/or honey (to make the shot less harsh). You can do the ginger shot in anyway you want too, Personally I prefer to do just have pure ginger, but these are some of my other favs..
-fresh ginger -lemon
Throw in the fruit in the juicer and add in honey after. Should only be enough for a shot.
Cut a slice of pineapple and sprinkle some cayenne pepper on it, use this to chase your shot with. (adding Turmeric will also do the trick).
-Fresh Ginger -Green apple
Throw both of the ingredients in the juicer and enjoy! OR just juice the ginger and bite the apple after the shot of ginger to make it taste sweet and delicious.
-fresh ginger -wheatgrass -honey
Throw the wheatgrass and ginger in the juicer and mix in the honey. Enjoy
Like everything else, doing to much of a good thing will obviously have its repercussions. Luckily its VERY HARD to have TOO much ginger, but for healths sake..try to keep it at a minimum of three shots a day.
They used to say ‘an apple a day will keep the doctor away’ but these days it seems ‘a shot a day will keep the doctor away’ plus you have an excuse to start your day to lil john..
Happy Ginger Shots Everyone!
