Motivation Is Bullshit
mo·ti·va·tion
/ˌmōdəˈvāSH(ə)n/
noun
- the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.
- the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.
Motivation is what drives us. Motivation is something we all have and it’s what gets us through the day. It supports our goals and helps bring our dreams to reality.
Motivation is your WHY. It’s the process of stimulating people into actions.
And sometimes, we have none of it. It can seem like a mission just to get up and get out of bed. Suddenly that burning desire to start a new project or grow your business isn’t enough to get started. The motivation is gone and we feel stuck.
Here’s the good news.
Motivation is bullshit.
Motivation, simply put, is the thing that convinces us to take action to make something desired to happen. It’s not magic that comes from somewhere in the ether, it comes from one’s willingness to TRY and DO THINGS despite it being daunting and challenging.
Our minds are wired against us. The brain evolved to protect us and keep us alive, so when we attempt to do things in life that are scary, difficult, or uncertain our it starts to warn us not to do it, that there is danger ahead. That’s why doing things that are easy or comfortable feel like a no brainer (pun fully Intended). But doing what you have always done is where things begin to stagnate, which frustrates our outlook because things are not moving and changing in life.
If you want to do something big, something ultimately life changing, you’re going to have to force yourself to do the things that feel intimidating, difficult, and uncertain.
We have been lied to our whole lives. We have been lead to believe that once we FEEL ready, we will feel the confidence and courage that is necessary, and know it’s the right time to make that move. This is bullshit. That moment will never come. The reason some people feel confident and courageous is because they faced their fears first, and leaped without knowing for certain what comes next.
Having ambitions and not pursuing them because of lack of motivation ISN’T actually lack of motivation, it is fear. In reality, motivation is getting your mind prepared for the next step.
If you were given everything you’ve ever wanted today, you wouldn’t be ready for it. Your life wouldn’t be what you thought it would be because you didn’t prepare yourself. You didn’t prepare your mind and it would take it all for granted. The truth in this is we don’t appreciate things in life we didn’t have to fight for and, here comes another cliché; this makes the journey the most important part. This is the part of life where who we are can adapt and transform our mindset and ourselves. The progress will be self-evident.
Every single day we each have thousands of thoughts that, when put into action, would change our mood or even our lives, and what do we do? Nothing. Our mind waits for that perfect moment that will never come around because it doesn’t exist.
A lot of our fear of doing (I wrote a post on this already, check it out HERE) is usually just a fear of failure. Except failure is only failure if that’s how you look at it. Every time you ‘fail’ you’re actually learning what didn’t work and are seeing something that doesn’t exist. When you find a new obstacle that you have never faced before your brain won’t inherently understand, and you are introduced to things you didn’t know existed. This is where your world expands. Your mindset changes and by being forced to try again in another way, you are given the ability to rebuild your structures and try again. Don’t blame a lack of motivation for your fear of failing. When we can face and overcome things we don’t understand life begins to have more meaning.
Remember:
➱Baby steps count too
➱People don’t value what they don’t fight for
➱It’s not a failure if you learned something
➱If you want to win, be tougher. Don’t give up give more
➱By doing things you are not COMPLETELY passionate about and totally committed to you are comprising yourself every day.
